‘Without a real physical barrier on our border, the situation will not improve.’

WASHINGTON—The Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) has issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s address to the nation regarding the federal government shutdown over funding for a border wall:

“The President sent a strong message from the Oval Office about what is truly a crisis at our southern border,” said Dale L. Wilcox, executive director and general counsel, IRLI. “This problem was not created overnight. It took decades of kicking the can down the road and prioritizing cheap labor over national security. Now we are seeing the true consequences of lax border enforcement, and Americans are demanding change. Without a real physical barrier on our border, the situation will not improve. Our elected leaders need to put short-term political interests aside and safeguard our country from this existential threat.”
