Chicago Tribune: Groups help defend Gary against challenge to its ‘welcoming city’ immigration ordinance

Two national groups have come to Gary’s defense against a challenge to its “welcoming city” ordinance.

The city has partnered with Georgetown Law’s Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and the Protection and the Public Rights Project to fight against a legal challenge to Gary’s “welcoming city” ordinance. The lawsuit, filed by the Bopp Law Firm in Terre Haute, claimed the designation violates a 2011 Indiana by limiting “local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities,” court records said, but the city’s defense team says the filing is just part of a “nationwide effort to roll back” welcoming city and sanctuary city designations….
